Kym Johnson: We've got a song that's kind of Halloween-based. We have the cha-cha and then we're doing the team tango with J.R. [Martinez] and Karina [Smirnoff], and Nancy [Grace] and Tristan [MacManus]. Team dances are always so much fun. ... We're calling ourselves Team Money. I don't really know why. It's from Broadway Week; it's all about the money. The other team has the paso doble. I think it's going to be really close between us. You guys got your highest score for your tango, so David should be comfortable with it, right? Johnson: Yeah, exactly. That was our best score, so hopefully we'll be able to do well with that one. We're trying to work on some movements and fix the little things so hopefully our group score will be even better than our [individual] score. And for the cha-cha, David's obviously never done that yet. We'll have to get his hips moving there, getting in the rhythm and all. David has a lot of natural rhythm and a lot of it is trying to get him to harness it. What do you think he still needs to work on? Johnson: I think he's too hard on himself, so he's got to start believing in himself and having that confidence. With that, I think we could definitely go all the way. How do you help him gain confidence? It's not like it's a step you can keep practicing over and over again to nail it. Johnson: Right. It's hard. It's just a matter of me building his confidence up and making him feel great about it every day. It's a lot of repetition where I really have to get into his head so that all of this feels second nature. We work six, seven hours a day every day. We haven't had a day off since the show started. That's just the way it goes and that's how you get results. Read Maks' Dancing blog I felt like things really turned around for you after the second week when you were in the real bottom two. Johnson: Yeah, we knew we were almost out of the competition and we've really turned things around since that week. I think he realized that, "Wow. This could end at any time," so it sort of gave us second life. Also in the third week, he danced for his daughter, which was obviously very important and inspiring for him. Carrie Ann said that she thinks we could be contenders, so I think the past few weeks have been really great for David's confidence as well. We just have to keep that momentum going. He's got so much energy that sometimes I think he's going to burst in the middle of a dance. Do you ever feel that way? Johnson: [Laughs] That's one thing we have to really try to contain! His energy could get a little bit too crazy, so that's a big challenge for us - finding the excitement and exuberance, but not letting it get out of control. Which of his improvements have impressed you the most? Johnson: His technique and his form, especially in the ballroom dances. His posture is so much better. He was having a real issue with his frame and posture in the very beginning, but he's really got that fixed up now. Some people are focused on chasing and dethroning J.R. Are you guys or are you focused on yourselves? Johnson: Just from experience, the best thing to do is to focus on yourself. It sounds clichéd, but it's true. You can't control others and you can't get caught up in who else is doing great. You have to try to do the best you can every week and hopefully you'll end up in the final and not even realize it. Social Power Rankings: Team Maks or Team Len? Pick a side, people! What did you think of Maks talking back to Len? Johnson: I mean, you get passionate about what you're doing. We put so many hours into it, so I guess Maks just got very passionate about everything. Maybe he could've said it differently, but I get where he was coming from. He's put so much heart and soul into it, and I think he was more so trying to defend Hope [Solo]. Chaz Bono also complained about the judges. Do you think they have gotten unnecessarily harsh over the years? Johnson: I don't think so. They're there and they do their jobs, and sometimes you don't like what you hear at all. And it is difficult when you have to go back and try to find that confidence again to continue. I don't know - I'm staying out of this whole thing! What did you think of Chaz leaving? Johnson: He was amazing. I love Chaz. He was just adorable. We're really going to miss him. He did such an amazing job every single week he went out. He really had a great time doing it too. He deserved to be there just like everyone else does. Your and David's impressions every week are hilarious. Can we expect another one this week? Johnson: [Laughs] We like to get into characters every week and then we just did Grease. You'll have to wait and see what we're going to do this week. There must be a Scream homage somewhere, right? On a bigger scale: the June "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" premiere takeover of Times Square yielded dozens of pages of YouTube videos."Your event can no longer be localized, it has to be viral on some level," says Mia Choi, founder of Gotham's MAS Event and Design, an event planning firm. Events are now about creating online content.Content can encompass immediate social net posts via Twitter and Facebook, an online link-up or webcast or digital media within the event itself, such as a silent auction via an iPad app.Sponsorships have always been the best way to augment event budgets in the era of austerity, but now sponsors want more bang for their buck. Event planners have found that the lately best way to maintain sponsor relationships is to integrate the sponsor into the event creatively and propel their brand online."The idea is to be subtle but also to get the message across," says Chad Hudson, prexy of Chad Hudson Events. (His firm produced the "Transformers 3" Gotham premiere and "Glee 3D's" Westwood bow.) Partnering with sponsors that make sense for a film's theme -- like installing a Godiva chocolate lounge for the "Valentine's Day" premiere, for instance -- is the best practice."How a brand leverages that sponsorship is really key on how effective it will be for that brand," says Chris Ryan, VP of L.A.-based R3 Marketing. At events, brands now ask for "build out" -- a branded VIP lounge at a post-premiere party is one model -- and a share in social media.Sponsors also need to give partygoers a reason to tweet. To that end, event planners must create immersive experiences, which can range from a photo backdrop that encourages guests to instantly share with cellphone cameras, to a party vignette (the chocolate room) that confers a story, to building an installation that instantly creates massive online awareness and interest (think Target's multi-media fashion spectacular and transformation of the Standard NY in August 2010).As Ryan describes it, this is new-generation sponsorship -- brands are not just sponsoring events, but reaching the audience there and making a meaningful connection. More than just logo plastering (though this tradition is healthier than ever), "brands need to recognize, if you spend money on a sponsorship, you also have to spend money to activate it," adds Ryan.A contest on Facebook or Twitter related to an event is one way to maximize sponsorship efforts. Virgin America did just that with its "Real Steel" tie-in with DreamWorks Pictures. Not only did the airline plaster a "Real Steel" robot image on a plane (unveiled by star Hugh Jackman) but also sponsored an online contest for fans to attend the pic's premiere."It makes our job as event people on some level more difficult but also more interesting," Choi says. What an amazingly cruel way to leave an impression on a child: take their most invincible hero, put him on the grandest stage possible and murder him before your young eyes. It wasnt even an hour into the film when he met his demise, but when the closing credits rolled 84 minutes later, reality sunk in: Optimus Prime was dead and Transformers: The Movie was the greatest animated experience for 80s babies everywhere. It was the summer of 1986 when the animated-gem was released in theaters and 25 years later the original "Transformers" movie remains the greatest adaptation (sorry Michael Bay). There was nothing that would prepare my six-year old self for what I was about to see. There was, however, a persistent rumor started by some kids in my neighborhood who got their kicks spreading persistent rumors (you know, the same kids who claimed to own a Super Famicon, the highly-coveted Japanese version of Super Nintendo). Supposedly the Kenmore movie theater in Flatbush, Brooklyn, was giving away free Transformers toys to all kids who made the first showing, and not just any toy: the planet-eating Unicron (voiced by Orson Welles). So, I begged my 16-year old brother who never took me anywhere to take me to the theater on Church avenue, just blocks away from our home. We made our way into the Kenmore; there were no action figures, but I wasnt too disappointed. I only half-believed the rumor anyway (I was six, but I wasnt a moron). Seeing my favorite television cartoon characters on the big screen was thrilling enough. It started off fine: the Autobots were enjoying life in peaceful Autobot City on Earth, and of course the Decepticons were plotting. The good guys always won; this was normal. This time though, things were different. The Autobots were taking a serious ass-kicking: Ratchet, Ironhide, Wheeljack, Prowl were all murdered. "Itll be okay," I thought. "Optimus will save the day." During his fateful battle scene with Megatron, Stan Bush The Touch even played in the background, and everyone knows thats like the most heroic song ever recorded in life. Itll be okay. Boy, was I wrong. Three laser blasts to the chest would be all it took to shatter all that my young mind believed in. It was during that 1986 summer that I would learn, bad things could happen to good people or robots. One day an Autobot shall rise from our ranks and use the power of the Matrix to light our darkest hour, Optimus said from his death bed as he removed his robot-like heart from his chest. Until the day til all are one. Then his body turned from a bright red, to a dull blue and finally a deathly grey. I dropped a tear screw it, the truth is, I cried. Right there in the Kenmore, I cried. Its one of those moments that my older brother still teases me about to this day. But Im not ashamed.
